2M2B (2-methyl-2-butanol), also called tert-Amyl alcohol, is a solvent with a history of study in both anesthetic research and technical work. 2M2B is not placed in the same regulatory category as GBL (gamma-butyrolactone), which may make it a versatile alternative for technical and laboratory applications.

This product is offered as a solution. Discrepancies between volume density and weight is why we also refer to it in grams in addition to milliliter.

Aromas

All aromatic solutions contain 2-Methyl-2-butanol, food-grade flavoring, and sucralose, with some also containing small amounts of propylene glycol.

1–2 x 3 g of 75-79% 2M2B is enough for most things.

Pharmacology

2M2B produces central nervous system depression comparable to ethanol but with greater potency and a distinct qualitative effect profile. Historically, it was used in medical settings as a hypnotic and was generally viewed as sitting between chloral hydrate and paraldehyde in terms of strength, with a safety margin considered superior to methylparafynol. (Patocka et al., 2012; Schaffarzick and Brown, 1952)

Unlike ethanol, 2M2B doesn’t appear to produce the aldehyde metabolites commonly associated with the hangover seen with ethanol.

Mechanism of Action

2M2B exhibits sedative, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant effects at doses of approximately 2–5 g in humans, corresponding to roughly 20-folds the potency of ethanol on a weight basis. (Patocka et al., 2012)

Key Properties Include:

• Sedative Effects: In animal subjects, primary effects last around seven hours. (Schaffarzick & Brown, 1952)
• Anticonvulsant Properties: Possesses anticonvulsant effects similar to ethanol. (Patocka et al., 2012)

Misuse

Toxicological literature has documented non-medical use, with reports describing an ethanol-like profile that shows higher potency, a longer duration, very quick onset, and generally fewer reported adverse effects. (Patocka et al., 2012)

Alcoholism Research

The purported safety profile of 2-Methyl-2-Butanol, compared with common alcoholic beverages, could offer real hope to people living with alcohol use disorder, especially those at risk of liver cirrhosis (alcohol-related cirrhosis).

In big mammals: one 3 g vial (2.61 g 2-Methyl-2-butanol) ≈ 2 strong beers of 6% to 7.5% ABV.
